Dorothy's Journey in Hairdressing
Dorothy's journey in hairdressing began with a spark of determination and a passion for creating beauty. Living in Kasangati, she joined a local artisan to learn the art of hairdressing. The path was not always easy, but her dedication and resilience saw her through.
Dorothy started her training with basic skills, learning how to retouch and treat hair. Slowly, she progressed to more intricate techniques like crotchet using natural hair or braids, hot combing, and a variety of braiding styles including knotless, bob, twist, normal, and Conroe, which is locally known as Kaswahiri.
Each day brought new challenges and opportunities for Dorothy to hone her craft. She would spend 5 to 6 hours plaiting a single client's hair, meticulously washing and treating the hair, plaiting it into Conroe, and then sewing Afro Kink artificial hair onto the plaits. One of her proudest moments was when she styled her daughter’s hair all by herself.
With each completed hairstyle, Dorothy's confidence grew. She had successfully styled six clients independently, a testament to her growing expertise. The market rate in Uganda for such services is at least Shs.20,000/- per head without materials. This potential income gave Dorothy hope and motivation, knowing that she could soon earn a stable income to support herself and her family.
But Dorothy's journey doesn't stop here. She dreams of mastering more complex and trendy styles such as Pencil, Spring Twist, and Dreads. She also aspires to learn makeup and bridal styling to offer a broader range of services to her clients.
Despite the progress she has made, Dorothy still faces challenges. She needs funds to acquire more training materials and a steady flow of customers to practice her skills. She prays for knowledge and understanding to continue growing in her craft. Additionally, she prays for her sponsors, asking for blessings and provisions for those who have supported her journey.
Dorothy's story is one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering faith. She has come a long way from where she started and is determined to keep moving forward. With each new skill she acquires, she is not just creating beautiful hairstyles but also building a better future for herself and her family
